The Dargle Valley is rich in biodiversity and is one of only 14 Special Areas of Conservation in Co. Wicklow. It is also a proposed Natural Heritage Area (pNHA) of national importance. The Dargle is a designated Salmonid River in accordance with the EU Freshwater Fish Directive and is home to salmon, brown trout and sea trout species.  The river is a habitat to three protected species of fish, the brook lamprey, atlantic salmon and sea trout.

Independent Filmmaker Éamon de Buitléar spent almost 30 years of his life living in the Valley of Diamonds alongside the river Dargle and the river features in his nature documentry films and writings. Read more about Éamon de Buitléar

The stream that flows through the private Diamond Valley garden has two names, the Countybrook Stream and the Glenmunder Stream (and if you go back a couple of hundred years it was once called Ferrily's Brook). Whichever you choose to call it, the stream is itself an important habitat. It is designated ‘Salmonid’ and is home to brown trout. A distance upstream of our apartment complex it flows through Ballyman glen, where the little stream valley is home to the very rare Narrow leaved Marsh Orchid.

Diamond Valley lies at the foot of the Wicklow Mountains, a large National Park with abundant flora and fauna. The apartments are but a short drive (or bus ride) from high quality hill-walking terrain. The 185 bus route, which has a stop outside the apartments, terminates at Shopriver, near Enniskerry, and close to the Glencree Valley, starting location for many pleasurable walking routes.

Living by the Dargle

The banks of the Dargle are home to a multitude of wildlife. Herons, mallards and swans nest at the waters’ edge and are frequently spotted from the windows and gardens of the Diamond Valley apartments, mallards even being known to swim up the stream that runs through the Diamond Valley gardens and graze on our lawns!
